Accounts that are ready before anyone asks for them.

A general ledger that holds up, balance sheet accounts that are supported, and year-end working papers built as the year goes rather than reconstructed afterwards — so statutory reporting becomes a review instead of a project.

What's included

What our financial accounting covers.

Bookkeeping records what happened. Financial accounting makes sure the resulting accounts are complete, supported and capable of being relied on.

01

General ledger maintenance

A chart of accounts that reflects how the business is run, and a ledger whose figures can be traced and compared.

02

Balance sheet reconciliations

Every balance sheet account reconciled and supported each period, not merely balanced.

03

Accruals, prepayments and provisions

Income and costs recognised in the period they belong to, so monthly results stay comparable.

04

Fixed assets and depreciation

An asset register maintained as things happen, with additions, depreciation and disposals recorded.

05

Year-end working papers

A complete file supporting the closing position, in a form your accountant or auditor can work from.

06

Audit and accountant liaison

We answer the queries and find the supporting detail, so your team is not pulled off their work.

Preparation and lodgement of statutory financial statements and income tax returns rest with your registered tax agent or auditor. Our role is to produce accounts and supporting records of a standard they can work from without rebuilding them first.

Why year-end hurts

Most year-end problems were created in March.

The cost of a difficult year-end is rarely incurred at year-end. It accumulates quietly through the year: a suspense account nobody cleared, an intercompany balance that stopped agreeing, a reconciliation that has been carried forward unchanged for eight months.

By the time anyone looks, the people who could explain those entries have moved on and the supporting documents are harder to find. Maintaining the accounts properly as the year runs is not more work than fixing them afterwards — it is substantially less.

Who it's for

For organisations whose numbers get examined by someone else.

The standard required goes up sharply the moment an auditor, funder or board starts asking questions.

Audited entities

An audit is coming and the file is not ready

Audit cost and stress track almost exactly with the quality of the working papers. We prepare them through the year so the audit is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Not-for-profit

Funds have to be accounted for separately

Where grants and programs carry their own reporting and acquittal requirements, the ledger has to support that split cleanly rather than through a spreadsheet maintained alongside it.

Multi-entity

More than one entity, and balances that must agree

Intercompany positions drift when nobody owns them. We reconcile between entities as part of the cycle so the group position holds together at reporting time.

How it works

From whatever state the ledger is in now.

We do not need the accounts to be in good order to start. We need to know what state they are in.

01

Examine the balance sheet

We work through every balance sheet account and establish which are genuinely supported, which are carrying historical balances nobody can explain, and which need correcting.

02

Clear and establish the base

Unsupported balances are resolved or written off with your agreement, the chart of accounts is tidied, and a reconciliation standard is set for each account.

03

Maintain it monthly

Reconciliations completed each period, movements reviewed and questioned, working papers added to as the year progresses rather than at the end of it.

Chartered Accountant oversight

Work that will be reviewed should be prepared that way.

Financial accounting is where the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant becomes visible. Knowing that a balance is wrong requires knowing what it should contain — and that judgement is what we are bringing.

Our principals are Chartered Accountants with more than 20 years across commercial, government, not-for-profit and regulated environments. Accounts are prepared on the assumption that someone competent will examine them, because in these engagements someone usually does.

In a previous engagement, our principal's review of reconciliations and financial controls identified financial irregularities exceeding $1 million. Reconciling an account properly is not administrative diligence — it is the control that makes everything above it trustworthy.

01Do you prepare our statutory financial statements?

We prepare the accounts, reconciliations and working papers that statutory statements are built from, and work alongside your registered tax agent or auditor who prepares and signs the statutory reporting itself.

02Can you work with our existing auditor?

Yes, and that is the usual arrangement. We prepare the file, respond to audit queries and locate supporting detail, so the audit runs against a complete set of working papers rather than interrupting your team.

03Our balance sheet has balances nobody can explain. Is that a problem?

It is common, and it is where we usually start. We work through each account, establish what is genuinely supported and what is historical, and agree with you how the remainder should be resolved before it is cleared.

04How is this different from bookkeeping?

Bookkeeping records transactions accurately. Financial accounting determines whether the resulting position is complete and correct — whether balances are supported, whether anything is missing, and whether the accounts can withstand examination. Many clients engage us for both.

05What does this cost?

Our fees are based on the volume and complexity of the work, including the number of entities, reporting frequency and the condition of the existing records. Ongoing engagements are generally provided for an agreed monthly fee, while clean-up and remediation work is quoted separately following an initial review.

Make year-end a review, not a reconstruction.

Tell us what state your accounts are in, who examines them and when. We will review the position and set out what it takes to get the file to a standard that holds up.
